    its funny though, …
its funny though, cuz of all gretzky’s assists and passes people still called him a puck hog and stuff

  2. skydiver1396

    150,000 is still …
150,000 is still pretty good pay back then i mean, you have to take infaltion into account

  3. leaffan27

    yeah, because Green …
yeah, because Green, Semin, Backstrom, Knuble are all slouches, right? wake up, Ovie’s got it pretty good, much better than Gretz had it in LA or NY

  4. leaffan27

    what a lousy point. …
what a lousy point…..you’re watching hughlights of GOALS….are the goalies supposed to look good when they get scored on?
Roy, Brodeur, Fuhr, Belfour all played while Gretzky was in the league, to name a few…..

  5. sumguy1973

    Gretzky was the …
Gretzky was the best and could’ve been the best today too if he was in his prime. Ovechkin being compared to him…common that’s like a slap on the face…us gretzky fans.

  6. TBoneMontana

    people say Gretzky …
people say Gretzky had advantage in playing in the 80’s. But infact Gretzky was one of the best players throughout the whole 90’s too. He did over 100 points when he was 35. He produced points at a high rate even when he was old. He is truly the best hockey player ever.

  7. MrHockeyPhreak

    go gretzky!!!!!
    go gretzky!!!!!

    As far as style …
As far as style making it hard to compare, imagine Ovechkin playing with 70s or 80s style equipment. He’d have to change his game or he’d be injured more often than he is now. Would he be as committed to playing hockey if he made $150,000 a year instead of millions? Also, note that many of the big scorers of the early 90s were still big scorers 10 and even 15 years later. The best players adapt to whatever system or style of play is needed to win.

    Another thing that …
Another thing that makes it hard to compare guys across eras is the style of play/ equipment/ money. In the old days passing/stick-handling was most important. Now skating is the #1 skill a skater can have. Some of the fore-checks teams use now would be totally reckless in an earlier era.IMO the great players would have been great players no-matter the era they played. Gretzky’s sublime passing skill and ability to forecast his opponents actions would be very valuable in today’s NHL.

    Nobody will ever …
Nobody will ever dominate hockey like Wayne Gretzky, the point is he was able to rise above every other player of his time, and before him, and nobody has been able to stand out as much since. That is what makes him the greatest player of all time.2857 career points doesn’t hurt either ;)

    its hard to compare …
its hard to compare players of different era’s. gretzky’s prime was the mid 80’s and forsberg the mid 90’s. The game changed so much in those 10 years, players got bigger and faster and they were far superior athletes. Like u said the only true comparison is between players of the same generation. In gretzky’s case the numbers dont lie. Granted the goalies and the defence in the 80’s were terrible but gretzky routinely had 50-60 more points than the next closest player..

  12. StefanR0

    To me numbers don’t …
To me numbers don’t say anything. I just compare players’ performances related to their class of opponents. Put Forsberg in Gretzkys time and he would have the records. Pele wasn’t the best soccer player by far and ali wasn’t the best boxer. Confrontate those with the speed of nowadays sports and they wouldn’t shine so bright. Sure he was astonishing and I agree with you regarding Ovechkin. Great technique but not a good teamplayer. Good to see in the russian Team. GREAT names, no results.

    have to laugh when …
have to laugh when people compare ovechkin to wayne gretzky. Gretzky holds 61 nhl records, won 4 cups, is the greatest goal scorer and assist man of all time. Ovechkin is just a good goal scorer, he’s doesn’t pass and doesn’t make his teamates better. i dont hear anybody comparing pavel bure to gretzky!!

  14. junitwannabe

    no wonder he scored …
no wonder he scored a lot. the goalies sucked so much

  15. riez07

    gretzy(NHL) is like …
    gretzy(NHL) is like jordan(NBA)

  16. stevehoey2

    @shazariahl 50 …
@shazariahl 50 goals in 39 games? :P that ones nuts

  17. stevehoey2

    @Wuenschelr im not …
@Wuenschelr im not so sure ovies going to score 50 in 39.. lol but manage 200 points in the future when his teammates get even better

  18. strakyz

    hes such a charry …
    hes such a charry picker!!!!!!!!

  19. TBoneMontana

    Well I would like …
Well I would like too see Ovie put up with a 100 point series when he is 35 which Gretzky did. And Gretzky did that in 95-96 and that was the time when hockey was extremly defensive.

  20. fuzz64

    Uh… did you not …
Uh… did you not actually read my post? I said right in it that Gretzky is a fantastic player.

    And guess what? Leafs suck!

Also… we will all day some day. They didn’t teach you that in school?

  21. TheCaptAwesome

    he was getting …
    he was getting older
    losing his touch
dont u dare say the gretzkey isnt’ among the best of the best
u diss him, orr, sittler, leafs, or dryden and u will die

  22. fuzz64

I’d like to see Ovi …
I’d like to see Ovi or Gaborik in the 80’s NHL or combo’s such as Carter and Richards or Crosby and Malkin. No offense to Gretzkey (as I know he was a fantastic player) but I think these guys/combos would be better since they’re all so much bigger/stronger/faster.

You could start to see it in the 90’s.. guys were getting better, especially defensively and Gretzky’s point totals per season went down in a hurry. (and yes I realize that the fact that he was getting older didn’t help).

  23. potatochip28

    3:13 he looks like …
3:13 he looks like bob saget haha
    but hes my hero
    gretzky not bob saget

  24. TheMirkku

    wayne gretzky is …
    wayne gretzky is legend

  25. tgwka

    Gretzky has more …
Gretzky has more assists (1963) then anyone else has points. He’s also the leading goal scorer of all time. I’d say he’s better than Mario. The only person who you might argue is better is Bobby Orr. I mean the guy won the scoring title as a defenceman. Still its hard to compare the two because obviously one is a defenceman the other is a forward. Still I’d give the nod to Gretzky.
