Example of importance.. I speak Chinese, but I have no particular accent unless I mimic one. When a Chinese person hears me speak Chinese, they would know that I’m a foreigner. This is the same case with many of the languages I speak, but are they still able to understand me? This is a clear example of the imprtance of accents. If I wanted to sound like a person from mainland China, I would try to..vice versa person from Taiwan.

I see. You see accent and the ability to speak as 2 parts of the language. I never had this kind of vision.Your point of view is very interesting. I consider accent as something very important because it’s easier for natives to understand you if you took their accent.
But the question is why do you see it as 2 different parts? why doesn’t it go together? talking directly with a good accent without separating it in 2 stages would be faster I think.

I like your suggestions in this clip, particularly the act of video-taping one’s self speaking in their target language(s). In fact, I just gave it a shot and found that I was impelled to think in the language more proactively. I think this is a great way to practice when one does not have the opportunity to speak to their language partners. Frankly, I think it’s a wonderful way to practice aloud with role play. I love this exercise!! Thank you so much!!

Sorry, I think you misunderstood what I was trying to say in that other video. The pronunciation is vital when it comes to any language. What I meant was, the accent is something that isn’t important in the beginning. Once an individual is able to actually speak the language, it’s up to them if they would like to study accents. Accents come natural after one is actually able to speak the language….of course if they try to pick up an accent.

I just have a question, in one of your video you said you didn’t pay attention to the pronunciation and that as long as people can understand you it’s fine. But why do you think this? Why wouldn’t it be better to tend to the native accent? I’m just curious because I care so much about accents when I learn a foreign language.

Thanks for the video. I have a question, i’m going to yahoo and paltalk to chat and practice my english or spanish but i rarely use the mic because i can’t keep a long coversation. What do you think? is it ok if i just practice with text chat?

I don’t necessarily …
I don’t necessarily have pronunciation drills. Normally when I listen to a dialogue, I try to mimic the native speaker on how things are pronounced. When I finish listening to the dialogue, I repeat it to myself and try to mimic the same sound as the native. I think listening to things over and over helps pronunciation.

As always, very informative.One question-We all know you like TYS but, don’t you find it a bit disturbing that in the TYS Korean book they basically only use romanization when explaining grammar ( I guess they use it when they are presenting dialogs and vocab lists). I find it REALLY distracting, I can read 한글 and sometimes I have to stop reading to try to understand the romanization. What are your thoughts on this one ? I suppose they also do it in other languages, right? Keep ‘em up Moses!

My learning system …
My learning system is pretty different. I never learn to introduce myself first because I know that I’ll know how to say that after a few month I just go into assimil books and learn the language in real situation as they offer you. I bought TY tagalog and I think isn’t so good… Because they don’t give you the word by word translation…They give you vocab with 3 or 4 words together and one meaning…
