November 26th, 2009
The Rankin Family performs “Mull River Shuffle” at the Parliament Hill celebrations in Ottawa on Canada Day, 1995. Joining the group are long-time band members Howie MacDonald, Scott Ferguson, John Chiasson and Ray Montford.
MULL RIVER SHUFFLE
Written by Jimmy Rankin
Picture this, ladies and gentlemen…
It’s fifty years ago on a small country farm
Johnny MacMaster’s place
And it’s Friday night…
You’ve just finished ten hot days of back breaking labour
And the hay…the hay is finally in……..
You’re sitting around the kitchen table
Under the dim light of a kerosene lantern
And everyone’s laughing and joking and telling stories…
about their neighbours
You’re half way through a bottle of….moon shine
And you’re getting aaaaaaaalll fired up!….for the dance
Ladies and gentlemen…the Mull River Shuffle……
Here comes Mister MacNeil
The fine shape that he is in
There is no telling which way he’ll feel
After his twister around the beinn
Raisin’ the jar and raisin’ hell
There’s plenty of stories that they will tell
Some are born of true detail
And some are purely fiction
Look up yonder it’s old MacPhee
He’s having a few he can hardly see
Wrapped his buggy around a tree
Someone call the Mounties
Raisin’ the jar and raisin’ hell
There’s plenty of stories that they will tell
Some are born of true detail
And some are purely fiction
Well, up spoke fine young Cameron
At the dance got a fearful hammerin’
Today all stutter n’ stammerin’
They’ll be to pay come Saturday
They’ll be raisin’ the jar and raisin’ hell
there’s plenty of stories that they will tell
some are born of true detail
and some are purely fiction
Danny Wright had a light
Burning bright every night
waiting for the fish to bite
along the shores of ‘Cocomagh
Raisin’ the jar and raisin’ hell
there’s plenty of stories that they will tell
Some are born of true detail
and some are purely fiction
There they stand by the door
Selling bush by the score
Asking you to buy some more
Along the shores of ‘Cocomagh
Raisin’ the jar and raisin’
There’s plenty of stories that they will tell
Some are born of true detail
And some are purely fiction
I’ll go home, I’ll go home
Full of the devil and full of the rum
I’ll go home, I’ll go home
We’ll all go home in the morning (Repeat 6X)

I absolutely love The Rankin Family - their voices are so pure, so genuine - and they all look so young here! “…full of the devil and full of the rum …” ~ words anyone raised on the Island has uttered! How fortunate to have seen and heard them many, many times!

I agree with you …
I agree with you Raibeart! The performance of “Mull River Shuffle” that you are referring to can be seen on the “Backstage Pass” DVD and seems more abandoned than this one for sure. Maybe because it was the encore to an amazing concert and the crowd was really into it. The Canada Day performance was more subdued perhaps because of the way the camera guys were right in their faces. It must make it hard to concentrate and let loose.
Thanks for the comment and good to hear from you.
